We report the first identification of the female molecule that induces competency of the pollen tube to respond to the ovular attraction signal. This molecule, named AMOR, is an ovular arabinogalactan sugar chain, of which a terminal disaccharide, methyl- glucuronosyl galactose, is necessary and sufficient for activity.
